Introduction to the Gospel According to Lost

This is the Gospel According to Lost - Episode 1 - One island, two brothers, and a bet.

Many people are not aware that the subtext of Lost is a bet by two brothers, Jacob and the Man in Black. And the brothers make a Job-like wager to answer the question: what are people likeat their core? In theological terms, the question becomes: what is human nature like?

And it’s such an important question. Because once you answer that question, then all other existential questions come into play. Why am I here? What is my purpose? What is the meaning of life? What about earth? And because religion has something to say about this, then all religious questions come into play: God, Jesus, the Bible, salvation, the afterlife.

All of those have to be answered as well when you answer the initial question.

And the show tackles this question over six magnificent seasons, in one of the greatest stories ever written for television. The brothers provide two answers. Two diametrically opposed answers, in a sense, two worldviews. I love the word for my friends in Latin America, cosmosvisión, a vision for the cosmos. How you see reality.

And that’s an interesting insight to begin this show. Because how you see people tells us your cosmo-vision. It definitely did for me and my former faith. I was living in a Christian universe.

And so in the Gospel According to Lost, we get to compare these two worldviews. We get to put put them side by side, and we get to showcase the worldview that the Gospel According to Lost is trying to communicate.

But here’s the real big payoff. In the two answers is the diagnosis of what ails modern human beings, and a solution to what ails modern human beings. I know that’s a big, bold, promise, but this show delivers. I’m going to add my own flavor to it. I’ll bring in my experiences, my own academic experience of course, but as you’ll see, the answer is stunning in its brilliance.

That’s the setup my friends. One island, two brothers, and a bet. What are people like? And that question allows us to explore all the other important questions that have to do with our existence here on this planet.

I hope you’ll join me for the Gospel According to Lost.
